Perhaps you need to build skills in communication, decision-making, budgeting, or conflict resolution. Or you might need help structuring your life so that you take care of personal needs such as cooking, laundry, shopping, cleaning, exercise, finding a job, or going back to school. When we’re struggling, even these types of daily living tasks can feel unmanageable or overwhelming. Are you taking charge of your life or are you at the effect of it?
Alcohol and drug addiction can be an overwhelming concept for many people. So let’s break it down a little. In the 12-Step world, it’s called a disease over which you are powerless. Step One says, "I am powerless over drugs and or alcohol and my life has become unmanageable.”
Let’s just start with the word “unmanageable”....
Whether or not you identify yourself as an addict, whether or not you’re in recovery, there can be many reasons why your life is unmanageable. You might be in a 12-Step program and have been clean and sober for years, but find that your life still isn’t working. Drugs and alcohol can certainly play a big part in making life feel unmanageable, but for some of us, even without drugs or alcohol we still can't seem to make life work the way we want it to be. Life can present us with many obstacles, but we are often our own biggest obstacle to becoming who we truly are and bringing what we most want into our lives.
You may be powerless over drugs or alcohol, but you are not powerless to change your life and create a life of meaning and purpose.
In a life beyond addiction, the whole world of possibility can open up to you. At XF Coaching, that’s what we’re here to help you do.
XF Coaching coaches adults and teens in recovery in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Soquel, Aptos, Scotts Valley, Watsonville, Monterey, San Jose, Los Gatos, Saratoga and all of Santa Clara County. We also work remotely over the phone and with Skype.
Do I have to participate in a 12-Step program? Do I have to be at any particular stage of recovery?
Whether you are contemplating whether drugs or alcohol are a problem in your life, or whether you have ten years clean and sober, we are here to help you. We can help you before, during, or after treatment, and wherever you are in your process of recovery. And while we support the 12-Step programs as a valuable and life-saving path for many, we acknowledge that there are many different roads to recovery, and we support you on whichever path is right for you.
How is coaching different from sponsorship?
A sponsor’s role is to help you work the steps and traditions of a 12-Step program, to live one day at a time, and to believe in the promises of the program. A recovery coach is there to help you with any area of your life that is challenging for you in which you need professional support and help along the way.
How is coaching different from therapy?
Psychotherapy can help you understand how you got from where you were to where you are now. Coaching helps take you from where you are now to where you want to be. While insight can certainly be helpful, our focus is on helping you take action, find solutions, achieve your goals, and realize your dreams. A psychotherapist may help guide you toward certain action steps; a coach plans and executes those action steps alongside you.
A recovery coach is also more accessible in terms of time and place. In therapy, you are generally limited to one or two hours a week in an office setting. With coaching, we can come to you, we can take you on errands, to meetings, events, appointments, etc., and we are available to support you in between appointments as needed, by phone, email, text… in whatever form and frequency of contact works best for you.
We are here to help you create a life that’s successful and fulfilling. Your recovery coach provides ongoing support as a collaborator, as a mentor in your journey of recovery, and as a partner in the pursuit of your goals and dreams.
